What could I do with an advertising degree?

I am about to go into my 3rd year and its kind of time to make a definite decision on my major…im really interested in the entertainment industry…so i was thinking maybe something at a record label… its kind of hard to explain what exactly what i want to do, because im not quite sure if i really know. i want to do something that has to do with advertising or marketing. i also heard i should major in communications. i dont want to necessarily do like designing or anything. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!! if someone wants to email me so we can go further into detail that would be great too!! THANKS…. first best answer gets the points!
ok maybe i was not clear…i wanted to know the different things i could do…obviously with and ADVERTISING degree i could ADVERTISE…but i wanted to know is it just limited to that

I understand your confusion! As someone who has worked in marketing for a number of years, I encounter people every day who work in marketing or communications and yet have no clue how these are different.

    The short answer:
    - If you are interested in how businesses and organizations can respond to the MARKET (ie meet the needs of customers), then you should go into marketing. Marketing is a BUSINESS function that is mostly about understanding the customer and responding to those needs.

    - If you are interested in communicating ideas to people (through writing, design, video, etc.), then you should go into communications.

    - Advertising is a very specialized profession that includes marketing professionals (who use their expertise about the customer) and communications professionals (who use their expertise about how to communicate with individuals).

This is a simplistic overview. There are of course many people who choose one of these majors and then get a job and expertise in another, since they are closely related. The key difference is in the perspective you bring to your work.

I hope that helps and doesn’t confuse you even more!
